For the last 40 years, second-generation family-owned Country Meat Packing Ltd. (CMP) has been supplying customers in Ontario and beyond with premium processed meat products. The company offers a large selection of items, including Black Forest ham, kolbassa, pepperoni, salami, roast beef, smoked sausage, smoked turkey, Danish-style bacon and more.
Based in Dundas, Ontario, CMP has been serving up fine, European-style deli and packaged meats for retailers, restaurants, distributors and wholesalers, all the way to mom-and-pop deli shops for two generations. Using natural smoke and only the finest, fresh ingredients, CMP takes great pride in crafting consistent, high-quality products backed by the slogan, “Committed to quality since 1976.”
40 years of family service
CMP began in 1976 when Ben and Jane Boekestein purchased a tiny butcher shop and meat processing facility just west of Dundas. Today, Country Meat occupies a 28,000-square-foot facility with 17 employees. The company was originally founded to supply traditional Dutch-style processed meats to the large European population in Dundas.
CMP still supplies Dutch stores throughout Ontario and across Canada, but as this market has faded over the years, the company has grown in new directions by diversifying and broadening its product line. CMP offers a full range of specialty processed meat products, including popular items such as Angus roast beef, Black Forest ham, Canadian and Danish-style bacon, hardwood smoked ham, oven roasted turkey, breaded beef croquettes, pastrami and other deli meats.
The company recently completed a special order for a major restaurant chain in Ontario. CMP crafted a pit-smoked ham for the well-known chain, which is adding the signature smoked ham sandwich to its menu.
Standing on food safety and quality
Many longtime and new customers call CMP every day, seeking the kind of quality the company’s 40-year reputation guarantees. CMP strives to deliver the best price and even more so, top-notch quality. The company takes great pride in crafting a premium slice of meat, made with fresh ingredients.
Another top priority every day at CMP is food safety. In its most recent expansion in 2008, CMP gained federal Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) certification. The company was also one of the first plants in Ontario to become HACCP-Advantage Certified – a program offered by the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs.
CMP has food safety inspectors on-site daily and is backed by a strong food safety program, regulated by a third-party company that CMP works hand-in-hand with on a daily basis. The company’s focus is on moving onward and upward, whether it’s in new and improved machinery or innovations in the meat business. For CMP, it’s a constant process of evolving and innovating to surpass standards in quality and safety.
Second generation succession
Today, the parents and founders of CMP, Ben and Jane are semi-retired, but still come in regularly. Today, their three children – Albert, Wendy and Carolyn – run the family business. The second generation assumed ownership of CMP in 2001 and continue to carry on the company’s legacy.
Over the years, CMP has seen pretty consistent growth, moving from a 1,200-square-foot operation to the current 28,000 square feet of production space. But even amid expansion, several things remain constant – one being family involvement and two, longstanding customers.
Like any multigenerational business, CMP has had its share of growing pains, but working as a team really keeps the company moving forward. Amid many large-scale processors, the company remains grounded in family ownership.
Even through industry changes, regulations and expansions, Country Meat Packing Ltd. has kept a sharp focus on quality meat products, taking great care and pride in the end product and longstanding relationships.
