The Vic Van Isle Group: A Cornerstone of Western Canadian Construction

In 1983, Revelstoke Construction Ltd. and Braniff Construction merged to provide clients with an increased range of construction services. The merger created Vic Van Isle Construction Ltd., which brought together construction professionals that take pride in investing heavily in the success of every project. Vic Van Isle Construction Ltd. continued to expand its services over the years through the acquisition of companies such as Glacier Building Supplies (GBS) and Lortap Architectural Millwork. During 2009, VVI Construction was established as the operating company for all construction activities. Further to this, a fourth division is being developed, now recognized as VVI Equipment (Rentals and Service).

Today, working under the umbrella of the Vic Van Isle Group, these four divisions provide everything from building material supplies and heavy equipment rentals to construction and architectural millwork services; together these symbiotic entities ensure clients have a complete source for their construction needs. The Vic Van Isle Group’s mission is as follows: To deliver select construction services to our valued clients through the dedicated support of our divisions; each with decades of experience, providing value pricing and quality results.

Since 1989, the Vic Van Isle Group’s primary facilities and head office have been in Revelstoke, British Columbia, with branch offices in Kelowna, British Columbia. The Vic Van Isle Group operates under the ownership of Lewis Hendrickson, company founder and president, along with Bruce Walker, vice president, Mario Lopez, and Paul Jones. The Vic Van Isle Group is logistically located and strategically equipped. Clients can rest easy knowing that the Vic Van Isle Group’s 150 or more employees represent a broad array of experience, giving it the ability to make decisions with a more than comprehensive understanding of all of its components.

Leveraging Extensive Resources

The VVI Construction division maintains a balance of private and public sector work, including a number of long-time clients in education and hospitality, as well as hydropower and other public works authorities. Additionally, the company has extended its reach eastward with a handful of completed projects as far away as Ontario.

VVI Construction’s projects are often supplied with materials from GBS, which is, like all of the Group’s divisions, committed to consistently offering quality and value pricing, increasing their competitive advantage to benefit clients. GBS is affiliated with Canadian retailer RONA Inc. as an independent building center enabling clients competitive pricing.

VVI Equipment (Rentals and Service) serves as the company’s equipment rental and service arm. The division has been a part of the Group since 1986, but its role was limited to only VVI Construction projects until recent years. The division now offers outside clients across Western Canada the opportunity to rent a variety of heavy-duty equipment, have their machinery serviced, or be provided with a wide range of services. The division also maintains an in-house journeyman welder, mechanic and fabrication shop to manufacture components to an engineer’s exact specifications.

Likewise, Lortap Architectural Millwork, in operation since 1979, employs a loyal staff of millwork professionals proficient in their craft. Lortap’s reputation is enviable in the industry and the company’s range of work is showcased in all three territories and throughout Western Canada. Lortap operates a 30,000-square foot shop equipped with all the high-tech and traditional tools of the trade to ensure the team can achieve the client’s most complicated design needs. Lortap recently won the prestigious 2012 AWMAC BC Gold “Award of Excellence for Quality” for its outstanding millwork during 2011 for Our Lady of Assumption Church in Port Coquitlam, British Columbia.

An Appetite for a Challenge

As a result of these combined resources, the Vic Van Isle Group has established itself as the contractor of choice for projects requiring multifaceted expertise, especially in building resort developments, luxurious high-rise condo properties and ski lodges.

Revelstoke is home to Revelstoke Mountain Resort, which offers lift, cat, backcountry and heli-skiing from a central village base, making it a true ski-in and ski-out destination. VVI Construction helped construct the resort’s first building, a 57-unit luxury hotel in the Sutton Place chain of hotels.

More recently, VVI Construction has been contracted to provide top-quality construction services to Mica Heliskiing; rated the best boutique heli-skiing destination in Canada. Mica Heliskiing enlisted VVI Construction (with its impeccable track record of remote lodge construction) to build a state-of-the-art, luxury lodge, which will be unique to the heli-skiing world. The project is on track for completion in time for the 2012 - 2013 ski season, which is much to the delight of heli-ski aficionados and Mica Heliskiing.

The Vic Van Isle Group intends to continue focusing on the markets that have helped develop business over the past 33 years; however, the company’s divisions are actively pursuing and exploring new market developments, such as renewable power, sustainable developments and more actively increasing its market share. By leveraging the combined resources of all four divisions, the Vic Van Isle Group will further solidify its position as a cornerstone of the construction industry in Western Canada for many years to come.
