The original owners of Cascade Roofing and Waterproofing have been in business in British Columbia since 1973. The company was purchased by three of its managers in 2014. Thomas Strahl, Russ Hetland and Dan Henrotte serve as the company’s directors. The new ownership team works with a staff of more than 60 people, providing distinct roofing, waterproofing and building envelope services from a headquarters in Chilliwack, British Columbia.

The company’s primary market consists of large general contractors and Cascade can handle projects from small to very large scale. In order to stay ahead in the market, the team focuses on quality, service and value.

“We value all of our customers and do our best to show this through our service,” notes Strahl. “As a growing company, our goal is to take care of our current customers as well as building new long lasting relationships. Our projects are typically more on the commercial side of the market, however, our company is diversified. We install all types of roofing, metal cladding, vinyl decks, aluminum railings, canopies, siding, and even complete exterior renovations.”

Building strength

Over the years, the Cascade crew has tackled complex commercial roofing, waterproofing and exterior projects throughout British Columbia. Recent projects range from prisons to financial complexes and everything in between. For each contract, Cascade keeps work in-house, maintaining control over quality and efficiency that are critical to completion.

Cascade is currently on-site at the Manulife Financial high-rise tower in Vancouver, British Columbia. “We’re in charge of all roofing and waterproofing,” says Strahl. “This project involves multiple levels from the ground floor to the 18th-story penthouse and there are roof patios on multiple levels in between. Our team is in charge of the waterproofing membrane, insulation and pavers. The project is on a tight timeline and this is a pretty massive site so coordination between the general contractor and other trades is critical.”

Another recent project is Cascade’s work on the Surrey Resource and Education Center in Surrey, British Columbia. The team performed all roofing and exterior envelope work and metal cladding on this new construction project. “On that project, we are installing our own L3R panel system – that is something we specifically fabricate in our shop,” Strahl adds. “It’s an economic alternative to a much more expensive look. We are in control of timelines more because of the fact that we fabricate it ourselves and we can provide better value.”

Cascade also has an ongoing project at the North Delta Recreation Centre in Delta, British Columbia. “We’re taking care of the entire building envelope, all exterior insulation, all the walls, but not the roofing on this project,” explains Stahl. “We are using a special thermally broken girt system and the majority of the exterior is a fiber cement panel system, shipped from Italy, as well as aluminum composite panels. Fiber cement provides high durability and life span, though we are ordering the product from Italy, which required procuring materials months in advance before installing it.”

Staying competitive

While Strahl says his team has been busy over the last year, the company still works to remain competitive with other contractors. A recent dip in overall pricing throughout the roofing industry has Cascade going head to head with contractors underbidding projects on the regular.

“We have chosen to continue to set ourselves apart through quality and consistency,” says Strahl. “We also have a plan in place for strategic growth. While we don’t have any major changes in our business structure planned for the coming years, we are steadily breaking into larger and larger contracts.”

Meanwhile, the company focuses on relationships: the lifeblood of the company. Cascade works with a set network of suppliers that are vital to ensuring the team has the correct materials and equipment in-hand and on-time. The team also strives for repeat business and has a strong following of loyal general contractors that trust Cascade to provide quality, efficiency and value on every project.

Strahl is excited about the future of the company. “Our new ownership team is young and excited to build for the future with new ideas and our team is working hard to make it happen,” he says. “I work with great people every day who are proud of the work they do. Our goal is to create a work environment that thrives on success and having fun along the way. This is a family atmosphere and we don’t want our employees to feel like it is a chore to come to work. I hope that’s reflected throughout the whole company.”

With a dedicated leadership team and a growing reputation for solid, lasting work, Cascade Roofing and Waterproofing Inc. will continue to raise the bar in quality roofing, waterproofing and building envelope services for years to come.
